Creative Collaboration Along the Art Coast

This year marks the 46th year that Saugatuck/Douglas has hosted its annual Fall Gallery Stroll, a highly anticipated art event appreciated by visitors and locals alike. One of the quintessential Art Coast experiences whether you’re an art aficionado or not, there’s simply no better way to spend an autumn weekend here.

During this spectacular autumn event, you can wander through dozens of galleries and artists’ studios along the Art Coast of Michigan as they extend their hours and feature special exhibits and activities. The picturesque streets of downtown Saugatuck and Douglas make for a charming backdrop as you stroll leisurely from one unique gallery to the next. Chat with the artists, watch live demos, enjoy live music, and sample delicious local bites and refreshments, all while expanding your artistic tastes.

A tradition since 1977, the Fall Gallery Stroll began with a small core group of Saugatuck/Douglas art galleries, which included J. Petter Galleries and former businesses Cain Gallery, Amaru Leather, and Gold Beaters. Headed by Joyce Petter—the original owner of J. Petter Galleries—the group’s inspiration came from a gallery stroll Petter experienced on Newbury Street in Boston. Admiring the creative energy and vibe that came from the collaboration between galleries, she felt it was an experience that would be well received here.

Since then, the event has grown and evolved, becoming an Art Coast tradition in which J. Petter Galleries continues to play a significant role in facilitating and maintaining.

Now, with more than 20 galleries and artist studios participating each year, you’ll find a wide range of artwork from local, regional, and national artists spanning mediums that range from contemporary paintings to found material sculptures. And while there are other exciting gallery strolls that happen here each season, the long-established Fall Gallery Stroll is known for being the premier arts weekend of the year in Saugatuck/Douglas.

This year’s event takes place on October 14, 2023. For more information, please visit our event calendar.
