Activities abound from November 19th through New Year's Day. The season kicked off with a holiday preview on November 19th at area shops – decorated in all their holiday splendor – including a contest to win a shopping spree in the Saugatuck area. Carriage rides were available in Saugatuck/Douglas on that day and will be offered on week-ends through December 17th. On Friday November 25th the Holiday Lighting Ceremony and Party took place in Wicks Park. The ceremony included music, refreshments, games for the kids and a visit from Santa Claus, all sponsored by the Saugatuck/Douglas Business Association. On Saturday December 3rd, a flurry of holiday themed activities & events will take place in the Saugatuck/Douglas area that include a Winter Greenmarket at the Saugatuck Center for the Arts from 10 am to 2 pm. Get ready for the holidays with fresh artful greenery, live music & local writers who will be present to sell and sign their most recent books. The "Dickens Quartet" will be singing as they stroll the Winter Greenmarket & Santa Claus will visit immediately following the Christmas Parade - bring your camera for photos with the man in red! The annual Christmas Parade will begin at 1 pm on Butler Street and will feature an array on festive floats, vintage Santa's, the men's Snow Shovel Brigade & the woman's Peppermint Stick Brigade sponsored by the Saugatuck/Douglas Visitors Bureau. Wine aficionados will want to attend Nouveau Fest at Fenn Valley Vineyards where they can taste the first wine from the vintage. On Sunday December 4th at 4 pm, the Lakeshore Community Chorus will present a Holiday concert at the Douglas Community Church. For more information call (269)857-2837. In its 25th year, the Saugatuck Village Players will present their annual community production of Charles Dickens classic holiday tale, "A Christmas Carol" at the Saugatuck Woman's Club. Local actor Steve Williford will delight audiences with his portrayal of the miserly curmudgeon Ebeneezer Scrooge surrounded by that famous assortment of Christmas ghosts and lovable Londoners all portrayed by local amateur thespians. Performances are December 9th though 11th & December 16th through 18th. Friday and Saturdays at 8 pm, Sundays at 7 pm with Saturday matinees at 2 pm. The grand finale to the Christmas Season and a hearty welcome to the New Year will take place over the Saugatuck/Douglas Harbor at midnight on New Year's Eve with a firework display presented by the Saugatuck Fireworks Committee with support from many local businesses, organizations and individuals. An array of New Year's celebrations will occur before and after midnight at a number of area restaurants and night spots.
