Saugatuck-Douglas Jazz Festival and Press Conference
Saugatuck, MI -The Idlewild Foundation will present the Saugatuck-Douglas Jazz Festival on July 31 and August 1, 2009 in Saugatuck and Douglas, Michigan.
The opening night performances at the Saugatuck Brewing Company will feature an array of musicians; Marcus Miller Quartet, Onita Sanders, Ron English Trio and Musique Noire and musical tastes (to accompany the wide assortment of ales) ranging from straight ahead, bebop, world music, funk and a touch of classical, with a potpourri of instruments; tenor saxophone, guitar, organ, harp, violins, violas and percussion.
The musicians will "sit in" with the other groups; guaranteeing that the audience will hear different sounds, textures and colors throughout the night. Tickets are $20 per person.
The next day beginning at 10:00 am until 5:00 pm the Saugatuck United Methodist Church will screen a very interesting documentary of the historic town of Idlewild, Michigan and also will screen jazz movies and clips such as A Great Day in Harlem, John Coltrane and Stanley Turrentine. Chef Jay Monson will prepare his award winning chili and other delicious food at the Café Cinema during the showing of the movies.
At 11:30 am the Flat River Big Band will lead the parade of festival-goers into Coghlin Park where they will swing in the sunshine on Dr. Dan's Bandstand at noon.
The big band will be followed by GEQ, jazz vocalist extraordinaire Ms. Barbara Ware, Cooper, Hay, Van Lente Group, Cruz Brothers and the New York based cooperative hard bop group of One for All. Admission to Coghlin Park and to the movies is $40 per person.
At 7:00 pm Shahida Nurullah, Marion Hayden, Kris Johnson Group, Gary Tu Trio, and a theatrical presentation of A Night at the Idlewild Club House and many more musicians will perform at the Saugatuck Brewing Company, Saugatuck United Methodist Church and Saugatuck Christian Reformed Church. Tickets are $20 per person. One ticket is valid for admission to the pub and the two churches.
Discount combination packages for all of the performances and venues are available for purchase.
Food, beverages and artwork available for purchase at Coghlin Park and the Saugatuck Brewing Company.
No glass, grills or alcohol permitted at Coghlin Park.
