SS Keewatin Immortalized
At 104 years old she is being honoured with a book!
The
SS Keewatin came to Lake Kalamazoo in 1967 after being retired from the
Canadian Pacific Railway Steamship Lines after 57 years. She is one of
the last Edwardian Steamships left in the world, having been constructed
in the manor of the RMS TITANIC, LUSITAINIA, OLYMPIC, and MAURITANIA.
Now at 104 years old she is being honoured with a book, written by one
of her last crew members about life on board through the eyes of a
teenaged waiter.
The author, Eric Conroy has been inspired to pen
these stories by his many visits to the Saugatuck/Douglas area over the
last 15 years, and by a pledge he took to the late Tony Vettori who was
the popular Mayor of Saugatuck.
Eric and his wife were leaving
town after a visit and they just happened to be the first car that went
through the stop light at the bottom of Butler as it turned green for
the first time in the season. Tony gave Eric a certificate as a "Citizen
of the light" which called on the recipient to do what ever they could
to promote Saugatuck tourism.
Eric has been promoting Canadians
to come to the area for years since and he sees this book as a chance to
motivate even more visitors to come using this fantastic artifact "The
Keewatin" as a lure. There are people all over the world that will visit
to see the Keewatin if they knew it was here. Eric thinks his book
might be a catalyst to make that happen.
