Saugatuck-Douglas Ranked 5th Small Town Getaway by Midwest Living Magazine The Saugatuck-Douglas Area is proud to be ranked #5 in the list of the 100 Best Small Town Getaways published in the June 2007 issue of Midwest Living Magazine. Come and see why the editors of this pestigious magazine recognize our area as a "perfect place to escape for a little shopping, sightseeing and relaxing." In their ranking, the editors noted the area's beaches, harbors, shops and galleries and specifically mentioned Saugatuck's Oval Beach.The Saugatuck-Douglas Convention and Visitors Bureau announced today that the May/June issue of Midwest Living Magazine has ranked Saugatuck-Douglas among the Top 10 Best Small Town Getaways in the Midwest just days after the Chicago Tribune Magazine picked Saugatuck's Oval Beach as the number one beach in the Midwest along the great expanse of Lake Michigan's coastline Midwest Living's Editors and writers who have been visiting the Midwest's small towns for 20 years selected the 100 best candidates from the Midwest's 8,500 towns with populations less than 20,000. Starting with their first issue in 1987 the editors picked the top 100 best small town getaways then ranked the towns in 12 categories: attractions, vibe, scenery, walk ability, shopping, dining, lodging, arts scene, outdoor activities, proximity to major cities, multi-day potential and special events. Finally the list was narrowed down to their top 10 choices. Saugatuck-Douglas not only captured a position in the top ten but took the 5th place slot. |

8 Michigan towns made the top 100 list and... 5 beaches including Saugatuck's Oval Beach made the final cut among the 17 beaches that were selected by Alan Solomon, Travel Writer for the Chicago Tribune. The finalists included:
"This Midwest Living article in tandem with The Chicago Tribune Magazine's designation of Saugatuck's Oval Beach as the #1 beach on Lake Michigan constitutes a 'Double Press Jackpot'", according to Felicia Fairchild, Executive Director of the Saugatuck-Douglas Convention and Visitors Bureau. "We are extremely fortunate to be entering the 2007 summer season in the wake of major publicity from two of the most popular publications in the Midwest. "She added, "this will certainly be a shot in the arm at just the right time for our tourism businesses." |
