ST. PATRICK'S DAY LIMERICKS

Who can enter?

Anyone and everyone who enjoys a lively, verbal challenge.

What is a limerick?

A limerick is a humorous, poetic verse, written in five lines, with a specific rhythm and rhyme scheme. Lines 1, 2 & 5 must rhyme with each other and have three strong accents; lines 3 and 4 must rhyme with each other and have two strong accents. Limericks often use work play, eccentric spelling or other witty features. Entries will be judged on structure, content and wit.

Samples:

A flea and a fly in a flue
were imprisoned, so what could they do?
Said the fly, "let us flee!"
"Let us fly!" said the flea!
So they flew through a flaw in the flue.

There was a farmer from Leeds
Who ate six packets of seeds.
It soon came to pass
He was covered with grass,
and he couldn't sit down for the weeds.

There once was a boy named Earl
Who loved a sweet little girl.
They danced a jig
while wearing a wig,
that made a bright pink curl.

Be sure to include your name, address, phone, and email with your limerick entry. Deadline for online entries will be Monday, March 15, 2010 at 5 pm EST. Winners will be announced online and via email on Wednesday, March 17, 2010.

All limericks submitted must be the original work of the individual submitting the entry.
