A pure Michigan
vacation in the heart of downtown Saugatuck awaits the guests of Ivy Inn,
whose vine-covered stucco exterior so appropriately reflects the B&B’s
name. Guests immediately leave their cares behind once they walk onto the
bed-and-breakfast’s relaxing screened-in porch—the first hint of an atmosphere
that feels more like a friend’s home than a hostelry.
Stepping inside the bed & breakfast, guests
are enveloped in the historic ambiance of a structure that was built in the
late 1800s to accommodate a boarding house. Turn-of-the-century antiques can be
found carefully scattered throughout the inn and a cozy fireplace in a
book-filled common area radiates a certain intimacy. A dining-room table
invites guests to play cards and games, or engage in crafts.
The inn features six cottage-style rooms, the
North and South with balconies that overlook two of the four lovely parks in
downtown Saugatuck. Each freshly decorated room offers a private bath, dresser,
ceiling fan, air conditioning, and cable TV. The Quilt Room is the largest,
with a four-poster iron bed, hand-sewn quilts, a sitting rocker, and small
wicker tables and chairs. The Quilt Room, Violet Room, and Ivy Room
present guests with a stunning view of the Kalamazoo River.
Birds nesting in the protection of the building’s ivy-clad walls serenade
guests with their songs in the morning and again at dusk.
Hungry guests start their day with a deluxe
buffet breakfast, which features such favorites as fruit cobblers, bagels, and
sweet or savory breads. The innkeeper will also provide a breakfast picnic
hamper for guests who prefer to eat alfresco at one of the nearby waterfront
parks. Outside relaxation can be found closer to the inn on the expansive porch,
which offers plenty of opportunity to relax or read on a swing and wicker
couches. Outdoor reflection can also be achieved in a hidden garden behind the
main house. In that hideaway, guests can ease into the day or unwind in the
evening on patio chairs sheltered by umbrellas.
