The gabled peaks of the Kirby House Bed and Breakfast punctuate the skyline
like tree tops set back off a ribbon of historic highway once known as the
West Michigan Pike. This bed and breakfast in Douglas has a long and romantic
history and is a registered Michigan Historic Site.
Today this classic Queen Anne Victorian bed & breakfast now accommodates
guests who have traveled back in time 100 years to get there. The path at
the side of the house leads to a cheery wrap-around porch with overflowing
flower baskets and wicker rockers. These are topped by a hexagonal turret
all overlooking ragamuffin English-style gardens.
Guests enter the foyer where the sunlight falls on the oak hard-wood floor
in a rainbow of colors fractured by the beveled glass front door – visitors
quickly become infatuated with this lovely old house. Upstairs all of the
eight guest rooms are decorated in Victorian comfort - each vary in design.
The rooms are bright and cheerful, decorated with antiques and accented by
patterned wall papers. Three have fireplaces.
What sets this Inn apart from others are its bountiful breakfasts which are
lavish "full" events. The two Innkeepers share the responsibilities.
Jim is the pastry chef. Ray, a chef with CIA credentials, supervises the
kitchen from where delicious gourmet breakfasts abound. His eclectic “cuisine
of the day” may include crepes ratatouille, baked peach & cream French
toast or Dutch apple pancakes —all served on fine china, crystal and linens.
Breakfast among the guests in the Inn’s oak-paneled dining room can be both
gastronomically satisfying and intellectually stimulating. Ray is actively
engaged in the culinary arts and has brought cooking classes to the Inn
The backyard gardens surround a heated pool and year-round hot tub, but for
those who prefer the gorgeous surf, Saugatuck’s Oval Beach is just a four-minute
drive away.
The feeling that ties everything together here originates with the Innkeepers
whose genuine warmth and easy demeanor fills the Inn with hospitality. If
you’ve come for relaxation, indulgence and romance Kirby House Bed and Breakfast
fills the bill.
