The Park House Bed and Breakfast in Saugatuck is imbued with rich history, and has provided rest and comfort to guests since 1983. The house was built in 1857 by lumber baron H.D. Moore, who owned a lumber mill on the Kalamazoo River adjacent to this home. The gleaming white exterior conceals a charming interior where many original features have been maintained and others carefully restored.
The history here is palpable. Susan B. Anthony, a suffragette and friend of H.D. Moore’s wife Tamar, spent time at the Inn drafting her women's rights documents and traveling the Midwest to recruit people for the women's movement and prohibition. The old wide pine floors and rough plaster walls of that era have been meticulously preserved. The building has weathered many incarnations including its years as a private residence, restaurant, boarding house and antique shop. Although the age of this 150-plus year old structure is apparent, the Park House Bed & Breakfast wears those years well!
The emphasis here is on cozy comfort. The B&B has nine rooms and one cottage. The individually styled bedrooms add to the character of the Inn and are furnished with turn-of-the-century oak antiques accented by soft luxurious cotton bedding. All but two of the nine guest rooms have fireplaces and several are suites with double Jacuzzi tubs or private outdoor hot tubs. All rooms enjoy the standard amenities of private baths, air conditioning and WIFI.
A hearty breakfast is served each morning in the relaxed atmosphere of the Inn’s common room, with it’s lustrous pine floors, all warmed by an open log fire in the cooler months. The Innkeeper loves to bake, so breakfasts are reminiscent of Sundays at Grandma’s house. Multi-grained French toast is the specialty here and it comes “stuffed” with the freshest produce in a variety of styles, featuring blue berries, peaches, apples and cherries plus a litany of baked goods. Freshly baked cookies are always available in the common area.
The Park House is a delightful setting in which to escape the stresses and strains of modern life. It’s just a brief walk to the busy center of town, yet it offers the rare commodity of peace and tranquility even during the busy summer months.
