Twin Gables Inn & Cottages

Originally built as a lumber mill, the Twin Gables bed and breakfast in Saugatuck has a romantic history dating back to 1856. The conversion of the lumber mill into a boarding house attracted Al Capone and his gang, who frequented the hostelry then known as the Saugatuck Hotel. They came to escape the blistering summer heat of Chicago during the 1920s and once left a bullet hole from an altercation in one of the Inn’s tin ceilings.

This 15 room two story white-clapboard structure is nicely situated across the street from the harbor at the entrance to Saugatuck. It offers a variety of bed & breakfast accommodations, including charming refurbished guest rooms in the inn and three cottage rentals next door.

The building has been remodeled several times, however, the best of the Inn's old character has been carefully preserved maintaining original beams, uneven floors, tongue-in-groove wainscoting, open fires and pressed-tin ceilings–all enhanced by modern comforts. Twin Gables Inn has been sensitively reinterpreted with no loss of its period atmosphere, resulting in modernized rooms named after Michigan wines.

Here the irregular floorboards, doors and walls are almost an art form. Guests ascend one floor to the clutch of bed chambers and they are transported to the 19th  century. Good use has been made of wallpaper and fabrics, complimented by furniture made of walnut, oak and mellow pine. The décor is muted in comforting shades such as sage green, jasmine and peach. Amenities include air conditioning, cable TV, WIFI and king and queen-size beds–some with fireplaces. There is also an indoor hot tub and an outdoor swimming pool.

The inns dining porch, which has a view of Saugatuck harbor, has a simple country look with plenty of sunlight streaming in through the windows. A hearty three-course breakfast is served each morning with Twin Gables custom-brewed blend of coffee.

The main floor of the Inn is the guest’s domain and many choose to spend time near the hearth in the common room, with its eclectic collection of upholstered chairs and inviting couches. In summer guests relax by the pool. During winter there are a variety of themed weekends and special packages from which to choose.
