Castle
in the Country Bed and Breakfast Inn has to be one of the most pleasant Inns in
Michigan. This stately Victorian B&B has immense character and provides an
ideal environment in which to unwind and an ideal base from which to explore
the Saugatuck area. A weekend at this Inn is as relaxing as a full week in most
places.
Built
in 1906 this elegant “painted lady”, located in the lush-green orchard country
east of Saugatuck, greets travelers from atop the crest of a hill surrounded by
gardens, meadows, apple orchards and rolling countryside.
Within
the grounds are delightful terraced gardens, a willow pond and an 80-acre
lake. The bed & breakfast offers a
seemingly endless variety of outdoor activities geared to every level of
energy. Summer guests enjoy fishing, hiking, kayaking, canoeing or just reading
lakeside in the small screened-in boathouse. Winter guests dispel the chill and
renew their romance in soothing whirlpools and in the flickering light of
blazing fires following the exhilaration of cross-country skiing, snowshoeing
or ice fishing. Most guests avail themselves of the Inn’s on-site spa services
year-round.
Deeper
within the property lies a brand new wing aptly named “the Castle Keep” which
is designed to accommodate the more contemporary requirements of guests. This
collection of two diverse but fascinating buildings features 10 luxurious rooms
or suites – some classic some contemporary.
Seven offer fireplaces and whirlpool tubs. All rooms are individually
decorated to very high standards. All have private baths, DVDs, VCRs, CDs and
free WIFI plus all the luxury amenities one would expect to find in a top-rated
Inn.
This
Bed and Breakfast is owned by husband and wife team Ruth and Herb Boven. While
Ruth tends to the affairs of the house Herb presides over the kitchen and the
balance they strike is perfect. Herb’s passion is cooking. Often while guests
indulge in one of Herb’s “from-scratch” breakfasts the lily pond comes alive
with soaring eagles, foxes, wild turkey and deer who delight onlookers with
their unscheduled appearances.
