Sometimes
vacations yield surprises and River Suites is one of them. This waterfront
establishment in downtown Saugatuck is an interesting study in contrasts. The
exterior of this two story barn-red wooden structure looks like a picturesque
New England fishing shanty. The pleasure craft and charter boats docked in
front rock gently while charter captains scurry amid ropes, lines and pulleys
to clean the morning catch. Small hand carved wooden signs tacked midway up the
building read “Deli-Groceries-Beer-Wine”.
The
outside wooden staircase leading up to two rental suites reveals no clue what
lies behind the two discreet entry doors situated next to each other at the top
of the landing.
Upon
entering, one is struck by the vivid contrast between the interior and exterior
of the building. The cathedral ceilings, supported by full length glass windows
that have replaced the second story walls, are breathtaking. Both suites are
flooded with sunlight and vistas of blue skies, fleecy white clouds, the
bustling harbor and winding river as far as the eye can see. The rooms are
chic, stylish and crisply decorated in light colors – white, off whites and
tans. The thought runs through ones mind, “This is complete modern comfort”
The
living rooms in both suites take full advantage of the spectacular views – both
have waterfront balconies, fireplaces and fully stocked kitchens. One can just
imagine martinis and animated guests! The bedrooms have king-size beds, private
baths and Jacuzzi tubs. The standard amenities include air conditioning, cable
TV, DVD’s and WIFI.
The
most interesting amenity of all is “Room Service”. The innkeepers, Menno & Jane Fairbanks,
also own the vintage convenience store and deli located on the first floor.
Jane is an excellent cook who whips up all sorts of baked goods and deli
favorites. They do a brisk business selling everything from aspirin and
newspapers to dinner specials, wine and beer.
Yep – you guessed it – they deliver!
River
Suites is so strategically located, that within 100 feet one can rent a charter
fishing boat, canoe, kayak, pontoon or two-person run-about. Take a ride on the
Star of Saugatuck, hop aboard the Saugatuck Chain Ferry or just walk two blocks
to all area restaurants, shops and art galleries.
This
is a special hide-away – tucked away in downtown Saugatuck.
