“Go fishing – make friends” –
That should be the motto of the Goshorn Lake Family Resort in Saugatuck. This
Michigan resort, set on pristine Goshorn Lake just outside Saugatuck’s city
limits is rarely advertised because generations of guests return year after
year to spend their Michigan vacation here. The resort is reminiscent of those
places where you spent childhood summers.
This small deep lake is fed by
Lake Michigan with just a narrow strip of elevated sand dune separating the two
bodies of water. The private lakefront offers an expansive beach furnished with
a kayak, rowboat and Adirondack chairs overlooking a swimming dock. This
picture-perfect lake is ideal for swimming, kayaking, canoeing, row boating or
just dropping in a baited hook to catch the evening meal.
The cottages and cabins
scattered throughout the property are fun and informal. They also vary in
extent of luxury. They feature one to several bedrooms and some offer
fireplaces. They are all very distinctively decorated in traditional light
pine, reproduction cherry or eclectic cottage-style furnishings – All have a
patio or deck and kitchen facilities.
The resort feels like a summer
camp, with cottages and cabins tucked off pathways into the natural landscape
surrounded by grass and hardwood trees. In addition to the beach, there are
abundant areas for children to play, including volleyball and shuffleboard
courts, a jungle gym, a sandbox and a community swimming pool. The staff treats
guests like extended family – They are happy to help, lighthearted and enamored
of the beautiful environment.
At dusk entire families look
out over carved paths and shadowed lawns towards Goshorn Lake – transfixed by
pure Michigan sunsets. In the evenings,
"cottagers" grill on their patios, barbecue at the beach or sit
around fire pits engaged in cosy conversations.
Goshorn Lake is the kind of
place kids remember all their lives – a place with new friendships, exciting
outdoor adventures and sheer freedom.
