Being Different is
Part of Our DNA

Saugatuck/Douglas has a long-standing history of opening our arms to people and ideas considered different from the mainstream. It’s what has shaped the character of our towns—making this a place where everyone is welcome, and anything can happen.

From nonconforming art students in 1905 longing for a different perspective to pioneering women in the 20s who blazed the trail for women doing “men’s work” to same-sex couples who found this area to be a welcoming haven during the 1950s, Saugatuck/Douglas has a knack for putting people from all walks of life at ease.

For decades, wave after wave of untraditional people, including hippies and motorcycle gangs, have washed into town, bringing their energy, creativity, and unconventional thinking. After years of learning to embrace people who were thought to be outside the norm, it’s no wonder that Saugatuck/Douglas has become the kind of place where everyone belongs.
