In Michigan, Autumn is one of the best times of the year to bike, due to “goldilocks weather” – not too hot or too cold, it’s just right. Plus, it’s one of the best ways to see the oranges, yellows and reds that the trees in Michigan take on during this time of the year.
Saugatuck and Douglas are both extremely bike-able towns, and due to their close proximity to each other, it’s easy to bike and even walk between the two. But if you’re an avid biker and you’re looking for something a little more intense or more immersed in nature, there are a few trails and recreation areas you need to add to your list:
The Holland Metro Trails are a network of paved trails that interweave throughout the town of Holland and extend into the Saugatuck Dunes State Park and the Village of Saugatuck. These trails not only link Zeeland, Holland and Saugatuck, but they also provide nearly 200 miles of trails within the greater area for bikers to explore. Parking, restrooms and water can be found at Saugatuck Dunes State Park.
The Blue Star Bike Trails is a project that is partially finished and also partially ongoing. Supported by the Friends of the Blue Star Trail, this network of paved trails are available for bikers, hikers and joggers to enjoy and will ultimately connect Saugatuck to Holland, Kalamazoo and Van Buren State Park. While many trails within the Blue Star Trail network are still under construction, there are many currently existing trails that make excellent scenic rides like the Beeline trail (stretching from Saugatuck to Holland) and The Blue Star Trailway (Saugatuck/Douglas). See the map below for other connected area trails and future trails!
3. Bayou to Beach Bike/Trail
This two-mile trail offers a great tour of the town of Douglas specifically! It stretches from Wade’s Bayou on Kalamazoo Lake, follows Center street through the downtown Douglas area, across Blue Star Highway and finally hits Lake Michigan at Lakeshore Drive.
