Jump into Summer this Weekend with Fine Arts and Fun

As we head into the second week of June, we also head into the second week of Saugatuck Expo, celebrating our region’s long-standing reputation for fostering and supporting the fine arts. With dozens of working artists residing in our communities, there’s a reason we’re called the Art Coast of Michigan, and this weekend is a great example of what we have to offer with some special arts-focused events.

Jump into Summer with the Accidentals kicks off the weekend with a party for the entire family at Saugatuck Center for the Arts. Indulge in delicious food truck fare, craft drinks, hands-on art-making activities, exclusive art for purchase, and FREE concert featuring one of Michigan’s hottest indie-folk bands, The Accidentals from 5-9 p.m.

The gallery at the Saugatuck Center for the Arts will feature a brand new exhibition, Storied Drawings: Works by Rebecca GreenGinnie HsuHillery Sproatt and Libby Vanderploeg.

The exhibition brings together four talented young artists and visual story-tellers whose drawing-based works range from GIF’s, interactive illustration (featuring conductive ink!) and animation to painting and ceramics. The exhibit offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into each of their diverse practices, as well as their unique cross-disciplinary applications that include children’s books, advertising, textiles, and fabrics.

Parents, don’t miss their related summer children’s programs while you’re here this summer, including storytelling, painting with conductive ink and illustrating comic books, taught by Libby Vanderploeg and Ginnie Hsu.

For those looking for more fine arts exhibitions, this Saturday is the day to be in Saugatuck/Douglas, as there are dozens of exhibition openings being showcased during the Summer Gallery Stroll and Art On Center. Experience the Art Coast of Michigan through strolling through our many galleries in downtown Saugatuck and Douglas. While every participating gallery will have artwork on display and for sale, each gallery will offer unique experiences like refreshments and live music. Check gallery/studio websites for specific times and specials.

While the first week of Saugatuck Expo is coming to a close, don’t forget that Restaurant Week carries on through this weekend as well. Bring the family, the friends, an appetite and get ready for some fun!
