September in Saugatuck – An Outdoor Lover’s Dream
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – September is one of the best times of year to visit Saugatuck/Douglas. Parking is plentiful, crowds have retreated, and shops, restaurants and galleries are all still using their summer schedule. Warm weather is still upon us in September, but cool evenings offer a refreshing glimpse into the fall season ahead.
Due to that subtle shift in weather, September is a great time for outdoor recreation, and there’s truly no better place for it than in Saugatuck/Douglas. You’ll find plenty of gorgeous spots for hiking, biking, paddling and more. September is also a great time for outdoorsy visitors with a competitive spirit as active competitions and events are in full swing. Below are a few must-do events for the outdoor lover this September:
Run the Ultimate Multi-terrain race through trails, sand and more in Saugatuck/Douglas this September. The signature 12-mile run the race has become famous for, starts and ends at the waterfront in historic downtown Saugatuck. Run through the scenic trails at Ox-Bow School of Art, Talmadge Woods, Woollam Nature Trail and, of course, the famous 302 steps up Mt. Baldhead. Don’t forget about the kiddos – the “Little Feet, Big Feat” .1K free fun run takes place on Friday, September 6 at 6 p.m. To learn more about this race and register, visit mtbaldheadchallenge.com.
Enjoy a countryside bicycle ride to fruit farms, wineries and cideries in and around South Haven, Fennville and Saugatuck as the fall color season begins to take shape. Four routes ranging in length from 15 to 62 miles are available to accommodate riders of varying abilities, starting in Douglas or South Haven. Rest stops, snacks, lunch and even shopping are offered along the route – with concierge service to transport purchases (produce, artwork and other goodies will be available!) back to the starting point, for riders to pick up after the event. The ride begins at 8 a.m. and advanced registration is required. To learn more about this race and to register, visit LHCBT.com.
Staying midweek? This weekly evening bike ride is the perfect way to tour the Fennville/Glenn area with experts! All riders are welcome. The bike rides take off from Waypost Brewing Company in Fennville at 6:30 p.m. and return for a well-deserved pint.
In addition to these fun events, don’t forget about the miles of hiking and biking trails waiting to be explored at your leisure, or our harbor waiting to be explored via kayak, stand-up paddleboard, or boat rentals.
After a long day outdoors, retreat to your choice of a cozy vacation rental, boutique hotel or quaint Bed & Breakfast. Visit Saugatuck.com/stay to plan your September trip to Saugatuck today.
